31st of May 2008 Ocean to City.....Uptake for this from Club Members was much greater than usual. Well done to all who took part (Ciaran Cooke, Tim Healy, Don O’Brien, Conor O’Geran, Dave O’Leary, Diarmuid Hickey, Don O’Hanlon & Donal Clancy) Weather conditions for the race were amazing and the race atmosphere was also super. This year seen a much larger turn-out for kayakers with a total of 46 kayaks over the three classes. This really created a great pre-race buzz. The race was won in a time of 1hr 45min 15sec. The fastest for PKC was Tim Healy with a time of 1hr 50min 28sec. Full results can be found here http://www.oceantocity.com/

5th - 6th April 2008 There was a REC 3 (Remote Emergency Care)course undertaken by 12 members of Phoenix Kayak Club at the Cork Centre for Emergency Care in Sports. This is a follow on from the REC 2 course that was completed in late 2007. Again tuition was excellent and much thanks and appreciation must go to course director Paul Allen for the professionalism and wealth of knowledge that he brought to this course. The course finished well into the late hours of Sunday night with a full scale exercise being carried out in the forrest located along the River Bandon. Seamus O'Mahony was unfortunate to draw the short straw and be chosen as team leader for the exercise. This really tested his leadership qualities as the exercise was very full on from the start but great admiration must go to Seamus for the way he held his head through-out the whole exercise which lasted a couple of hours. For those of you who were unaware of the weather conditions. Temperatures were well on their way to the - 4 Celcius as forecasted by the time we finished up. All in all, I think everybody really enjoyed the course and if anything, it has given us as a club a huge basis of knowledge in Remote Emergency Care which we can expand to meet the needs of our demanding sport.
4th April 2008 Friday night was the last night for Pool Sessions. These were a great sucess with lots of paddlers managing to learn to roll and even a few experienced paddlers taking advantage of the warm pool to perfect their roll. Many thanks to Evan for organising this.
